Adjusting the Mai Dress to Fit Multiple Sizes

MS Mai Dress Pattern

Learn how to adjust the May dress to fit between sizes when the waist measurement corresponds to a different size than the bust measurement.

In fact, it's very common for your waist measurement to be different from your bust measurement.

For this pretty Mai dress, making some adjustments is essential but very easy.

Here, we'll show you how to do it.

Case 1: My bust measurement is smaller than my waist measurement.

Sample measurements for this tutorial: bust 88 cm and waist 76 cm.

That is, a size 38 in the bust and a size 42 at the waist.

The pieces to be adjusted are the front and the back.
In the diagrams, we will show only the front, but the technique is the same for the back.

Step 1: Trace the side line

About 5 cm under the arm, draw a freehand line starting at 38 and connecting to line 42 at the waist (pink line in the diagram)

1- Adjust the Mai dress to fit between sizes

Step 2: Redraw the clamp

Transfer the pin for the medium size to the pattern. In our example, the medium size is 40.

2- Adjust the Mai dress to fit between sizes

Here's another example if I don't have a median size: my bust is a 38 and my waist is a 40. I'll keep the dart at size 40.

Step 3: Cut out or trace your new pattern!

3- Adjust the Mai dress to fit between sizes

What about the other rooms?

The facing pieces should be cut to the same size as the bust. So, size 38 in our original example.

Finally, skirts should be cut to the same size as your waist. This is because skirts are loose-fitting and therefore do not require any adjustments, regardless of whether your hip measurement is larger or smaller than your waist measurement.

So that corresponds to a 42 in our original example

Case 2: My bust measurement is larger than my waist measurement.

The principle is exactly the same 😉

There you go—now you know how to adjust the Mai dress to fit between sizes. In any case, we recommend making a mock-up the first time 😉
