Iron-on interfacing (or, as we call it at Majam, “thermo”) is a must-have for a wide variety of sewing projects. Here’s a quick rundown of everything you need to know about iron-on interfacing.

What is iron-on fabric?

Iron-on adhesive is a synthetic fabric with a special adhesive layer on one side. This adhesive is heat-activated. Thus, the iron-on adhesive bonds to fabric when heated, usually with an iron.

Interfacing will therefore add an extra layer of structure to your fabric. Depending on the situation, this can make your fabric easier to work with or reinforce areas that require some stiffness or greater durability. It is often used to stabilize lightweight, stretchy, or delicate fabrics; to simplify the creation of complex details such as hems, collars, or buttonholes; and to add durability to garments by reinforcing areas prone to wear and tear.

Why use iron-on fabric?

As mentioned above, using fusible interfacing in your sewing projects will simplify many steps and ensure neater results. It helps minimize common mistakes, such as fabric slipping or stretching while sewing. This means less frustration and more enjoyment as you work on your projects. Be careful, though—you shouldn’t iron-on interfacing all over your garment! Be sure to follow the instructions in each pattern’s sewing booklet to know where and when to use iron-on interfacing.

Iron-on interfacing is also important for adding durability to your creations. It helps maintain the shape of clothing and accessories by reinforcing them and thus protecting them from everyday wear and tear. This is especially true for frequently used parts such as bag handles or buttonholes.
