In this article, we'll show you how to modify the pattern to turn the "Mai" dress into a maxi dress.

1- Determine the desired length
The first step is to find the length that's right for you. To do this:
- Standing in front of a mirror, place the front skirt pattern piece at your waist.
- Determine the length.
- Next, use a measuring tape to measure the length you need to add. For example, 40 cm. Then add another 5 cm. (It’s just like at the hairdresser’s: it’s better to start with a longer length and trim it down at the end than to end up with it being too short!) In our example, that comes to 45 cm.
2- Modify the pattern
We're going to show you two techniques: one that's very easy, and one that's a bit more involved. The choice is yours!
The Easy Technique
- Extend the sides of the skirt by 45 cm.
- Mark various points starting from the bottom of the skirt, at 45 cm
- Connect all these reference points to redraw the bottom of the skirt.
This technique works on all skater skirts. It gives your dress a soft, flowing drape.
The more precise technique
- Cut along the “Lengthen/Shorten” line on the front skirt pattern piece, and separate the two pieces.
- Tape some pattern paper to the back of the pattern. (pink in the diagram)
- Extend the straight line on the pattern paper. Measure 45 cm and mark a point.
- Tape the bottom of the pattern to this mark, making sure the grain line is aligned.
- Redraw the side lines. Red lines on the diagram.
- Cut out
- Alter the back skirt pattern in the same way.
This technique uses less fabric than the easy method. However, the finished look is less loose, so you’ll need to check by measuring your hip circumference to make sure the skirt still fits over your buttocks. If it doesn’t, spread the bottom edge of the skirt slightly and redraw the side seam to allow for more room.
This technique was used on the version of the Mai dress shown in the photo below.
How much extra film should I plan for?
To turn the May dress into a long dress, you'll also need some extra fabric.
The additional amount will depend on the extra length, but plan on 1 meter more for sizes 34–48 and 1.50 meters for sizes 50–58.
