How to sew a button

Sewing on a button is THE skill we all need to know at least once in our lives!

Whether it's to replace a button that's popped off your favorite blouse, to customize a jacket, or to finish the fly on a pair of pants you just sewed.

In this article, we'll explain in detail how to sew or reattach your buttons!

The Different Types of Buttons

Before getting into the technical details, it’s important to know that there are two types of buttons:

  • The button with a tail, which you can recognize by the small loop on the back.
  • The flat button—which, as the name suggests, is completely flat!

Depending on the look you want for your garment and the type of buttonhole, you'll need to be sure to choose the right button.

Sewing on a button (or reattaching one!)

Now let's get down to business!

1- Thread a piece of string through a needle and tie a knot with the two ends. This creates a double strand of string.

2- Stitch on the right side. The knot will then be on the right side of the fabric.

3- Sew the button through the holes. Sew it on about 3 times.

4- Similarly, thread it through the other two holes.
