Determine Your Dress Style

The starting point for a beautiful sewing project is, of course, the style of the pattern: skater dresses, fitted dresses, gathered dresses, ruffled dresses, short dresses, long dresses… there’s something for everyone!

To get a sense of current fashion trends—and, most importantly, your own tastes—we recommend creating a Pinterest board of dresses you generally like and adding to it as you go. The idea is to be able to refer to it when choosing a pattern so you can recreate the look that catches your eye!

Your sewing skill level

Our patterns are rated on a 5-point scale: from beginner (1/5) to expert (5/5).

The idea is not to limit yourself based on skill level, because as we often say at Majam, the desire to sew a project really gives you wings!

Of course, if this is your first sewing project, we recommend starting with a Level 1 or 2 pattern, but if an intermediate-level project appeals to you, don’t hesitate to give it a try! Majam patterns come with very clear instructions and video tutorials to help you along the way. With a little patience and perseverance, we guarantee you’ll succeed!

Jerseys or warp and weft?

It’s important to note that sewing patterns designed for stretchy fabrics like jersey won’t work with non-stretch woven fabrics. This is because the pattern-making process differs depending on the type of fabric. So be sure to choose a pattern that’s suitable for the specific fabric you have in mind.

Take your measurements

To determine which pattern size to choose, you'll need to take your key measurements: bust, waist, and hip circumference.

Compare your measurements to the size chart for the pattern you wish to purchase. We offer two size ranges for the paper pattern: 34 to 48 and 46 to 58. For the digital version, all sizes are available when you purchase the PDF pattern.
