How can you tell?

Corduroy is a type of fabric weave that creates prominent ridges on the right side.

It is one of the strongest, sturdiest, and most durable fabrics. It is also a warm fabric that is comfortable to wear. This makes it ideal for sewing pants, jackets, shirts, or shorts.

What kind of needle should I use to sew this fabric?

Corduroy is a thick fabric, so we recommend using a size 80 all-purpose needle.

Which iron-on patch should I use for this fabric?

The good old H180 that works with everything! (Or almost everything! As we explained in our article on how to choose the right iron-on transfer.)

Pay attention to the direction!

That's right—velvet is a directional fabric! In fact, depending on whether the nap is facing up or down, the color can change. It's therefore essential to cut all your pieces in the same direction, just as you would with a pattern.

On the other hand, whether the nap is “up” or “down” doesn’t really matter. Choose whichever direction you prefer and stick with it. Keep in mind, however, that it’s common practice to cut the fabric with the nap facing down.

Iron on a low heat setting

Iron on the reverse side to avoid burning or flattening the pile. If you need to iron on the right side, protect the fabric by placing a dish towel between the iron and the velvet.
