Tutorial: Sewing a Shirt Collar

Sewing a Shirt Collar

We’re sure some of you think sewing a shirt collar is a daunting task. To help you out, we’ve created a tutorial that walks you through each step, one by one, so you can make a shirt collar! Now you know the technique for making the pretty collar on the Ginny dress!

Step 1: Preparing the Shirt Collar

After cutting out and fusing your pieces, sew the collar flaps right sides together as shown in the diagram.

Trim the corners by cutting away the excess seam allowance to create neat points, turn the fabric right side out, and press carefully.

To hold the collar securely in place, sew a basting stitch 7 mm from the edge along the raw edges.

Step 2: Shape the shirt collar

At the bottom of the fusible neckband, with the wrong side facing you, press an 8-mm fold with an iron, then unfold it.

Pin the collar ( which you just made) to the right side of a collar stand between the outer notches. Start by aligning the notches, then distribute the rest.

Pin the other collar stand on top. The collar is now sandwiched between the two collar stands, right sides together.

Sew, starting and ending the seam 1 cm from the edge.

Trim the seam allowance slightly at the curves, then turn the collar stand right side out and press it carefully .

Step 3: Sew the collar to the garment

Sew the unfolded collar band to the neckline of the garment, right sides together, making sure they line up properly:

  • Shoulder notches with shoulder seams
  • The notches in the middle of the back, one next to the other
  • The ends connected to each other

Use an iron to press the seam allowance toward the inside of the collar.

Fold the folded edge of the collar band toward the inside of the garment. The neckline is now sandwiched between the two collar bands.

Then sew, with the right side facing you along the seam, to close the collar.
