Should I use a contrasting thread for the gathers?

Many of our sewing patterns use the gathering technique in their construction. At Majam, we always recommendusing a contrasting thread for the gathers.

Here are three reasons why we recommend using contrasting thread.

Reason 1: Your work will be easier to read.

By using contrasting thread, you'll be able to see your gathers much more clearly, whether you're distributing them with your fingers or sewing your pieces together.

Reason 2: Save on yarn

That's right—gathers use up a lot of thread! Since this thread is only used to create the gathers, it's best to use a thread that doesn't matter.

Keep a spool of matching thread for visible seams, and reuse leftover thread from old spools and bobbins for gathering.

Reason 3: Don't damage your fabric

With a contrasting thread, there's no risk of confusing the gathering thread with the fabric weave.

This way, you’ll avoid the big mistake of making a hole in your garment or unpicking the seam.
