Cotton for Beginners in Sewing

Fresh Flower Cotton Voile Fabric

Cotton

  1. It hardly frays at all (–> so you don't need to overcast it)
  2. You can create creases with your fingers(such as hems)
  3. It doesn't slip
  4. It's easy to iron
  5. There's something for everyone—in every color, solid, patterned, and more.

Point 5 may seem trivial, but it’s not. When you’re learning, you need to encourage yourself, and when you have a fabric you like, it motivates you to do your best.

What's the weight?

Actually, it's a bit flexible. You can choose a cotton fabric with a weight between 110 and 150 g/m².

So, using medium-thickness cotton will save you a lot of adjustments when it comes to:

  1. Needle size: Your machine usually comes with a size 90 (or 14) needle, which is perfect for this type of fabric.
  2. Wire voltage: Just set it to neutral.
  3. Choosing the thread: cotton or polyester—it doesn't matter.

In conclusion, cotton is the best, but not just any cotton: medium-weight cotton, because it’s neither too thick nor too thin (a pleonasm!).

The type of cotton we don't recommend: cotton voile, because it's too thin for the first few times.
