Are you curious about sweatshirt fabric? Do you want to sew a sweatshirt? Now's the time!
In fact, to celebrate the release of our Trinity sweatshirt pattern, we’ve decided to put together a how-to article to show you how to sew your own sweatshirt.
Sewing machine or serger?
If you have aserger, now is the time to use it for all seams except topstitching.
If you don't have a serger, but only a sewing machine, don't worry—you can still sew a sweatshirt with a regular sewing machine!
To do this, use a stretch stitch for the assembly seams. Check your sewing machine manual, as there are many different types. Our favorite is the “Harry Potter” stitch, which creates a sort of lightning bolt pattern. It’s also sometimes called the elastic straight stitch.
If you don't have one, a tight zigzag stitch will do.
Here's a summary of the main expandable points below:
Our Sewing Tips
We have two main tips for sewing your sweatshirt:
- Use chalk or a dry-erase pen to mark your lines instead of making notches with scissors, which can weaken knitted fabric.
- Use a special jersey or stretch needle. These needles have a rounded tip, which prevents the stitches from breaking. If you’d like to learn more about needles, read our article onthe different types of sewing machine needles.
