What is double-gauze fabric?
Double gauze is a fabric made up of two layers of gauze stacked on top of each other and sewn together with small, nearly invisible stitches.
To see these tiny stitches, you can gently peel back the edge of the fabric: you'll then see the stitches rise up.
Gauze is what’s known as a weave—that is, a method of weaving fibers to create a fabric. It’s very breathable yet strong, which is always surprising.
Technically, double gauze can be made from any material, but in 90% of cases, you'll find it made of cotton.

Another advantage is that this fabric’snatural crinkled texture eliminates the need for extensive ironing. A quick steam or air-drying flat is all it takes. That’s always a welcome time-saver!
The final advantage of double gauze is related to its two layers of fabric: it is not a see-through fabric. This makes it an ideal choice for sewing with light-colored fabrics.
Our tips for sewing with this fabric
As always, wash your fabric first. Double gauze is no exception!
As for supplies, use fine pins and, preferably, a size 70 needle. A size 80 needle will also work if it is new or in excellent condition.
When sewing, the main risk with double gauze is distorting the fabric. In fact, it’s so airy that it’s easy to pull on the fibers and distort them.
Be sure to take your time when cutting the pattern pieces from the fabric, and don't pull on the fabric while sewing, as this could cause the pieces to lose their shape. Be especially careful when sewing hems and facings.
If you follow these tips, you'll find that double gauze is a very pleasant fabric to sew with!
