How to Sew Gathers
Gathering is an essential technique used in many sewing projects. The goal is to reduce the width of a piece by creating gathers in the fabric. The methodis carried out in two steps:
To do this, sew a first line 0.5 cm from the edge, and a second line 1.5 cm from the edge.
Here are our tips for sewing neat gathers:
- Enlarge the stitch as much as possible (4 mm is fine)
- Loosen the thread tension slightly
- Do not backstitch at the beginning or end of the seam
- Leave enough thread sticking out at the beginning and end of the seam so you can pull it easily later
- Preferably use a contrasting thread
Next, distribute the gathers by working the fabric with your fingers. Try to distribute them as evenly as possible.
Once you’re satisfied, tie small knots on each side to keep them securely in place.
