Supplies for Beginners in Sewing
Measuring and Marking
Before you start sewing, you’ll need to prepare your fabric. To do this, you’ll need a rulerand a tape measure. The ruler is rigid and helps you draw clean lines on the fabric. The measuring tape lets you measure everything—lines, curves, arcs, and more.
To draw your construction and cutting lines on fabric, you have several options. You can use either traditional tailor’s chalk—which is inexpensive but not always easy to handle—or a more convenient chalk pen. You can also use air-erase pens, which are a good compromise; however, the marks may not erase completely on certain fabrics.
Cut out
Once your fabric is ready, it’s time to cut it. For this,sewing scissors are essential because, unlike regular scissors, they’re designed to cut fabric.
To trim the little threads that are always left over at the end of a seam, you'll also need a pair of smallembroidery scissorsfor maximum precision.
Finally, if you make a mistake while sewing, don’t panic—theseam ripperis here to help. It’s a small, hook-shaped blade that lets you undo seams. A must-have for beginners—but not just for them 😉
Pin and iron

Of course! If you're just starting out with sewing, a simple mechanical machine will do just fine. However, if you catch the sewing bug, you'll soon want an electronic machine with more features.
Basic Knowledge of Tissues
Fabrics are the foundation of your projects. Here are a few basics to get you started:
- The Two Main Types of Fabric: In sewing, the most important distinction is between woven fabrics—known as warp-and-weft fabrics—and knitted fabrics, which are stretchy. This distinction is important because you cannot make a stretchy garment (such as a T-shirt) from a warp-and-weft fabric, and vice versa. So be sure to pay close attention to this when you’re just starting out in sewing.
- Fibers: Fabrics are generally made from natural fibers (cotton, linen), synthetic fibers (polyester), or a blend of both. We've written a more detailed article about this here.
- Fabric thicknesses: Some fabrics are thin and lightweight, while others are thick and heavy. To start, we recommend choosing a medium-weight fabric.

Threading the needle correctly: Refer to the machine's manual to learn how to thread the needle properly.
